Georgia Food Stamp Program

friendshelpingfriends started this conversation

The Georgia Food Stamp program provides monthly benefits to low-income households to help pay for the cost of food.  A household may be one person living alone, a family, or several, unrelated individuals living together who routinely purchase and prepare meals together.

Anyone may apply for food stamp benefits.  The program helps households that have limited income and resources.

Click here to obtain information about applying for benefits and to find out about eligibility requirements.

When an application which provides the name of the head of household, date and signature of the head of household or another household member is received, either through the mail or in person or by fax, to the Department of Family and Children Services, the application is considered filed. Both a blank application and information on the application process are available below in Adobe Acrobat format.

After your application is filed, you or a member of your household must be interviewed by a staff person from DFCS.  The person who is interviewed must know about your  household situation.

For an elderly/disabled individuals or individual experiencing problems coming to the office, the interview may be done by a pre-arranged home visit, through the mail or by telephone.   Elderly/disabled households may qualify for benefits regardless of their amount of gross income.

To apply for benefits contact your county Department of Family and Children Services.

Food Stamps Pre-Screening Eligibility Tool

This Pre-Screening Tool can be used to determine if you may be eligible to receive Food Stamp benefits. This Pre-Screening Tool is not an application for Food Stamps. An application for Food Stamps must be made at your local Food Stamp Office.

Before you begin, you may want to look up the amounts of your earnings, rent or mortgage, utility bills, child support, day care expenses, medical bills (if you are 60 or older, or disable), child support payments or SSI, social security or VA payments.

in response to tomwalter...   I do not speak Spanish, drive a nice car, and I am on food stamps... also, I wear nice clothes. I buy my designer jeans at garage sales and I got about twenty items for a quarter a piece at a thrift store close-out. I lost my job last year and the little bit of credit I do have would be lost if I gave my car back, and since I do not have a job and have returned to college I would not be able to buy the *clunker* you think I deserve.

My boyfriend on the other hand is from Cuba, speaks Spanish, has three degrees, makes 6 figures and is kind enough to take me and my children out to eat (which I am sure you feel I do not deserve, and obviously my children do not deserve to be treated well)

People like you make me ashamed to be an American.

in response to gapeachy...   According to statistic more whites are on food stamps than blacks or hispanic. This has always been true. I agree some things should not be a black, white or hispanic issue but this is the society we live in.

in response to disppointed...   Why do you say Black people and Hispanics get more food stamps. It is based on income. Why are things always reduced to race related comments,

I have been notice that their system is NOT equally... 1. Black people AND Mexican got more in food stamps than they should.... 2. They reduce the food stamp as annual increase in Social Security benefits. *THEY DON'T GIVE A FLY IF FOOD PRICES GONE UP!!!!* 3. Their telephone system SUCKS because there is NO representative option when you calls about the card.

in response to bambino3...   same county was handling mine. I did my review in sept 11. online and was denied because a caseworker changed my income. so i reapplied on oct 1, 2011. and i waited for a letter or phone call..... i called and called, after 30 days they said i was denied cause i didn't show for an appt. which i never got a letter about. so i reapplied nov 16, and on the 18th i finally got a letter saying i had an appt. and i was denied for not showing. both dated nov 17. SOMEthing is seriously wrong..... so, i finally got a call from case worker about the nov 16th app. and this was on dec 15th. so, the info what was requested was faxed the next day and on january 3rd when they finally reopened they still had not input my info i faxed into the system. this is a full 90 days of no stamps. i used my rent money to pay for food. and now im being evicted b/c someone didn't do there job. my income was the same as in sept, never should have lost them in the first place. just thought id share my story in case anyone else was dealing with the bartow county dfacs.

i was born on american soil,as my parents, i am in need of assitance, i may currently unemplyed, in need of food stamps to continue, i was up for a review that was due on 12-05-11, i recieved the review notice on 12-03-11. i sent the required letter for review. on 12-28-11, i then recieved a second notice telling me i was going to be cut off due to the fact i never sent my review. they apparently lost it. i then went to the local Barrow county office were i was told that i would need to fill out a form they then handed me, the form was due on the 30th, when i went to return the required form, the office was closed for a holiday, an then again they were closed for the holiday on monday the 2nd. how nice for our social workers to recieve such a holiday, but when i then got in on the 3rd, the receptionist proceeded to tell me that she never recieved my first review, and it would take up to 24 days before i would recieve my food stamps.....i did my part as required, an i am being brutally punished, i need my food stamps on the 10th as before, i dont have a damn thing in this home to eat.....is this fair? is this how the government treats OUR people? something is terribly wrong with this system, an i will try to seek some help in correcting this! someone made a mistake, it was not me, an they need to be recognized for thier inability to do thier job correctly!

in response to lividmom...   you cant get ahold of dfcs. I have tried for 3 weeks to get ahold of my case worker and her supervisor and the main line. That is for cobb, douglas and cherekee county. They will not return your call either. They termininated by foodstamps and my daughters medicaid due to their mistake and told me to reapply. So i filed an appeal. so then i was directed to the complaint department because i didnt feel they were going to file it. Let me tell you if you want a problem worked out asap with dfcs. Get ahold of these people listed below. They get back to you emmeidiately. I contacted them last friday, received an email back the next day and received a phone call the following day, then it was the weekend and holiday. They called me today on Dec.29 2011. and reinstated my foodstamps and medicaid emmediately. They only have an email though. But i promise they will get back to you even if you only have a question. And for all those that read this . It is a federal law for all government agencies to answer your left message in 24 hrs and have documentation of the call and how they resolved it. Here is they email 'customerservice@dhr.state.ga.us' trust me they are on the ball.

If you havent gottent you food stamp money by today I suggest you call you caseworker. Under the new system that started this month they are distributed according to the last 2 didgets of your case number between the 1st to the 15th so if you didn't get them today something is definitly wrong. My last 2 digtis are 74 and I get mine on the 12th.

Unless we have the wrong id number we should have gottan it on the 6th and today the 12th is the day we usally get it. We had made a address change on the 6th and applied for medicaid a few weeks ago. Of course I can't get anyone to call me back or the numbers to work. So if anyone can help thank you also my husband and I are going back to school so we can do better for are kids sense the last few years we have lost jobs after jobs you would think him being in the army for years would help him get a job but it don't .
